Roses, Chihuly's flowers and victory flowers

As I wait out my last weeks before beginning the long, long process that is graduate school, I am constantly looking out for some productive things to do, this usually includes catching up on some reading, making popsicles, doing laundry, or packing for the move - this afternoon let's make that productive thing a blog post.

From our little apartment we are about 5 minutes (less than that probably) from the Fenway Victory Garden, about 5 minutes (less than that probably) from the Museum of Fine Arts (which is currently exhibiting Chihuly's glass art that looks like flowers), and about 1 minute from the Fenway Rose Garden. So we're surrounded with flowers, not unlike Dorothy in the poppy field.

Chihuly is a glass artist who trained at the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence. His exhibit has been on display at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston for about 5 months (?) and Amanda and I have been to it twice now. He does  a lot of really interesting things with glass and light.

The Fenway Victory Garden is a community garden which dates back to food shortages in WW II (or WW I?). The idea was that local food production could alleviate food shortages. Strangely, and to my dissapointment, the garden today is almost exclusively flowers. It's beautiful no doubt, but think of all the cucumbers, apples, lettuce, and carrots that could be produced and consumed locally! There is a great debate surrounding how agriculture can adequately meet the needs of the global population - some say it can be done using sustainable agriculture and others say that mechanization and greater use of agro-chemicals is necessary.  Another side of the debate is to say that agriculture should be not the exclusive domain of rural populations, but that urban dwellers should also contribute to the food supply - urban agriculture in other words. There is no Panacea, of course, but producing food in urban areas would surely help. Now back to the flowers!

Also nearby to our apartment is this rose garden, it has tons of roses!
